Doctoral Colloquia

The 2025 BHC Doctoral Colloquium (DC) in Business History will be held in Atlanta, Georgia on March 13th. The participants will be invited to a welcome dinner on March 12th in Atlanta. Typically limited to ten students, the colloquium is open to doctoral candidates who are pursuing dissertation research within the broad field of business history from any relevant discipline (e.g., from economic sociology, political science, cultural anthropology, or management, as well as history). Most participants are in year 3 or 4 or their degree program, though in some instances applicants at a later stage make a compelling case that their thesis research had evolved in ways that led them to see the advantages of an intensive engagement with business history. We welcome proposals from students working within any thematic area of business history.Read more about this year's doctoral colloquium

Doctoral Colloquium Archives

The Doctoral Colloquium was established in 2005 with funding from the Newcomen Society of the United States. The Colloquium was supported by the Journals Division of Oxford University Press through 2014 and now continues with the support of Cambridge University Press, which publishes the BHC's journal Enterprise & Society. The Colloquium annually offers a small group of graduate students an opportunity to work intensively on their dissertations with distinguished Business History Conference-affiliated scholars, including at least two BHC officers. The Colloquium is held each year in conjunction with the Business History Conference annual meeting. Participants, who are chosen through a competitive application process that is announced with the annual meeting call for papers, discuss dissertation proposals, relevant literatures and research strategies, and employment opportunities in business history.
