Business Historians at Business Schools
Aldo Musacchio is a Professor of Management and Economics at the Brandeis International Business School and a Faculty Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). He has a Ph. D. from Stanford University and prior to joining Brandeis he was an Associate Professor and Marvin Bower Fellow at the Harvard Business School. He is currently the co-editor of Financial History Review.
Professor Musacchio’s early research focused on the evolution of financial markets and corporate governance, especially in Brazil. More recently his work has examined the evolution of state capitalism around the world and the conditions under which state ownership and investment can give advantages to private firms. His book Reinventing State Capitalism, co-authored with Sergio Lazzarini, examines the performance implications of different governance arrangements in state-owned enterprises (SOEs). In his latest project, Prof. Musacchio examines when state-supported innovation can yield better outcomes. He has a paper examining the conditions under which state-owned enterprises can outperform similar private firms on patenting and is working with Debarshi Nandy to study the outcomes of the innovation model used in the United States Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa).
