Julia McClure is a senior lecturer in late medieval and early modern global history at the University of Glasgow. She is a specialist of global intellectual histories of poverty, inequality, and colonial capitalism. Her latest book, Empire of Poverty: the moral economy of the Spanish Empire (Oxford, 2024), explores the role of the ideology of poverty in global empire formation and multiple forms of resistance. She is the co-editor of an interdisciplinary volume examining the roles of taxation and welfare policies in the creation of global empires and their inequalities (Imperial Inequalities: The Politics of Economic Governance across European Empires, co-edited with Gurminder K. Bhambra, Manchester, 2022). McClure is a socially engaged academic and has led a number of research projects in Latin America, the UK, and other parts of the world, as co-founder of the Food Sovereignty Network (2021) and founder of the AHRC-funded Poverty Research Network (2016).
