"Values and Perceptions: An Entrepreneur’s Nearly Forgotten Purchase and Sale of America’s First Black-Owned Radio Station"

In 1949 entrepreneur, Jesse B. Blayton, Sr., purchased the WERD Radio studio, founding the first Black-owned and operated radio station in North America. In 1968, he sold it - to a White businessman. This business decision was not one supported by Atlanta Black community leaders. This case explores the values and perceptions that led to Blayton’s decision to purchase the radio station and his later decision to sell it to the highest bidder, who happened to be outside of the Black community.
