I am interested in how science, law, and market experts shape everyday understandings of food, diet, and risk and responsibility. My book, From Label to Table: Regulating Food in America in the Information Age (available for purchase with the University of California Press in November 2023), examines how the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulated food and health markets from the 1930s to 1990s using, first, food standards and, then, informative labels such as nutrition and ingredients panels. My next book project looks at the rediscovery and reinvention of the Mediterranean diet as a global public health tool and regional marketing and branding strategy.
