I study the cotton industry in 20th century Egypt, concentrating on intermediate processing--ginning, cleaning, baling, etc. My research examines the businesses and regulatory institutions that physically transformed raw plant matter into a tradable, high-quality commodity. I am interested in the governance of global value chains, standards and regulation, and the intersection of agriculture and business.
