Manuel A. Bautista González is a business and financial historian whose research examines the historical evolution of international payments and financial infrastructures in the Americas. He is an Associate Member of the Faculty of History at the University of Oxford and a researcher on Global Correspondent Banking 1870–2000 (GloCoBank), a project funded by the European Research Council.

His work combines archival research with quantitative and network analysis to study how banks, firms, governments, merchants, and other intermediaries developed the institutions and networks that connected Latin American economies to regional and global markets. More broadly, his research traces the changing organization of international payments from merchant-financial systems based on specie, bills of exchange, and commercial credit to correspondent banking, trade finance, and modern payment infrastructures.

Manuel holds a licenciatura (B.Sc.) in Economics from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and a Ph.D. in United States History from Columbia University. His dissertation, “Gold and Silver Chains: The New Orleans Specie Market under International Bimetallism, 1839–1861,” received the Best Dissertation Award from the Nineteenth Century Section of the Latin American Studies Association and was a finalist for the Business History Conference’s Herman E. Krooss Prize.

He has taught undergraduate and graduate courses and supervised students at UNAM, Columbia, the Center for Research and Teaching in Economics (CIDE), and Oxford. From 2018 to 2020, he worked as a consultant with The Winthrop Group and served as lead historian on projects related to the 150th anniversary of Goldman Sachs. He has also published research and analysis on payment systems, financial inclusion, and monetary ecosystems for CashEssentials. Since 2020, he has served as a convenor of the Financial History Network.
