Abstract

The Business History of Latin America Expanded: A Survey of Publications from 2010 to 2020 Compiled and Made Visible by The Business History Collective

In 2021, the Business History Collective (BizHisCol) launched an ambitious, collaborative project. Committed to providing greater visibility of Ibero-America’s intellectual production, some committee members of the Collective (including us) invited the fellow members to register in a single database their works of economic, business, and labor history from 2010 to 2020. This enterprise resulted in a database of 1,038 titles that we edited and posted on the web page of the BizHisCol. The dissemination of this database provides valuable opportunities to make more comprehensive historiographical assessments and to continue working collaboratively on making publications widely visible and accessible. In this paper, we survey the works from the database that better fit into the category of business history of Latin America. Besides widely known publications, we analyze a large body of works that had been conspicuously ignored in former surveys. We aim to contribute to a better understanding of the trajectory of Latin American business history and to offer new insights about the debates, themes, sources, and methods, as well as about publication outlets, authorship networks, research groups, and some other singularities of the intellectual production in the region over the last decade.
