Business Historians at Business Schools

Dr. William Mazzaferro is a historian specializing in the history of industry and labor. After earning a Bachelor’s degree focused on labor history, he completed a Master’s degree with a thesis that broadened the scope to include both labor history and business history, centering on Saras, an Italian oil company. This research trajectory was further expanded during his doctoral studies, which encompassed the entire Italian refining sector, offering a comprehensive analysis of industrial transformation and labor dynamics.

Following the PhD, Dr. Mazzaferro has held postdoctoral positions investigating two distinct sectors: the state-owned electric industry, with a particular focus on SIP, and, more recently, an highly internationalized Italian wool district. These projects have further extended his research interests to include the complex interplay between economic actors—conceived as a nexus of business and labor history—and the political sphere.

Dr. Mazzaferro’s work is characterized by a multidisciplinary approach, bridging economic, social, and political history, and provides valuable insights into the evolving relationship between industry, labor, and state in Italy during the second half of the twentieth century.
