Julia Sarreal is an Associate Professor at Arizona State University. Her research focuses on the southern cone of South America and spans from the colonial period through the twentieth century. She is the author of Yerba Mate: The Drink that Shaped a Nation (University of California Press, 2023), which merges economic and cultural history and applies a longue durée approach to commodity history to reveal the untold story of how an Indigenous beverage and cultural practice forged Argentine national identity. Her first book, The Guaranà and Their Missions: A Socioeconomic History (Stanford University Press, 2014) integrates quantitative and qualitative analysis to shed light on the experiences of the Guaranà Indians residing in Catholic missions during the 18th century.
