Paloma Fernandez-Perez, Universitat de Barcelona

Abstract:

The paper analyzes the role played by pioneering networks of public and above all private actors to the transfer of the new innovations in the diagnosis and therapy using new X Rays technology to public and private centers and patients in the first third of the 20th century. The papers uses mainly primary sources from large hospitals of the city of Barcelona, a large city in Southern Europe during the first third of the 20th century. The paper studies the emergence in the consumption and use of X Rays equipment, a new technology at the time, increasingly used to treat tumors and cancers in large cities. The paper presents the creation of new SMEs specialized in providing services, the socioeconomic and medical criteria established to pay fees for those services, and data about the number of patients that received those services in the largest hospitals of the city. The paper contributes to existing literature about the dissemination of new medical equipment like XRays in the world, by providing new empirical primary data that shows the complexities in the organization of private-public organization of centers providing the new services, the struggles of the medical class to establish regulated fees of the new services with a huge variety of medical and socioeconomic criteria, and the fast acceptance of the new technology to treat an increasing number of patients suffering cancer in large cities.
