My focus in business history is on the postbellum cotton trade of the United States, underground and informal economies, crime and fraud, and the waterfront of New Orleans after the Civil War. I am the co-author of *The Cotton Kings: Capitalism and Corruption in Turn-of-the-Century New York and New Orleans* (OUP, 2016) and co-editor of *Southern Scoundrels: Grifters and Graft in the Nineteenth Century* (LSU Press, 2021).
