Abstract

"The Complexities and Ethics of True Crime Media"

Lauren Buchanan, Indiana Institute of Technology (laurenbuchanancommunications@gmail.com)

In my panel contribution, I will delve into the complex intersection of media law and ethics when covering death and true crime. I will discuss:

Privacy Rights of the Deceased: Understanding the legal and ethical considerations when reporting on the deceased, including balancing the public's right to know with the privacy rights of the deceased and their families.
Tasteful Reporting: Navigating the delicate balance between informing the public and exploiting tragedy. I will explore how to report on sensitive topics with empathy and respect for the victims and their loved ones.
Accuracy and Fact-Checking: The importance of rigorous fact-checking and avoiding the spread of misinformation, particularly in the age of social media.
Sensationalism vs. Substance: Discussing the ethical implications of sensationalizing death and true crime stories and the importance of providing context and depth to complex issues.
By the end, attendees will gain a better understanding of the legal and ethical framework surrounding death and true crime reporting. They will be equipped to make informed decisions about their own reporting practices and to critically evaluate the media coverage of such events.
